Outfit Post: High/Low Style

As a student, I love a good bargain (law school books are ridiculously, stupidly expensive).  When I found this dress at Old Navy, I was excited.  As Claire can tell you, there are few clothing items I love more than a long sleeve sweater minidress.

I've never been the biggest Old Navy fan, but I really love this dress.  It's super flattering on and the construction/fabric is actually quite nice.  Paired with a nice bag and a Burberry headband it totally worked for a moderately fancy dinner with the family.

Dress: Old Navy, Tights: Spanx, Bag: Rebecca Minkoff, Boots: Frye

Have you found any good bargains lately?

A Looooong Week and a KSNY Sample Sale

Happy Thursday everyone!

I am ashamed to admit that my last post began that way also...and it was two Thursdays ago.  I am sorry for going MIA but, with my law school schedule being about a week behind Kate's, I'm where she was last week with the first written assignment due today and whatnot.  I can attest to the steep learning curve of legal writing.  As someone who has always believed herself to be a fairly good writer, the struggle with the short memo was a bit of a blow to my ego in addition to being a significant amount of work.  How many hours of sleep did I get last night?  Oh right, three and a half.  But I digress.

So, to backtrack a little bit and share some news from the past few days, Kate Spade had a flash online sample sale yesterday! (Was it yesterday? It seems so long ago now).  Now, I am a HUGE sucker for things like this.  And I do mean huge.  Full disclosure: I am an aggressive deal-hunter and, not to toot my own horn, but I am a very skilled shopper.  However, my greatest strength is also my greatest weakness.  Tell me I'm getting 75% off on something and I'll buy it.  I don't care what it is.  I don't care if I wanted it before it was on sale.  Free shipping, you say?  Here's my debit card.  Just keep it.  You can have it.  This problem is so severe that I had to unsubscribe from Lucky magazine's daily deals because I couldn't stand that kind of torment.  Every morning I wake up to on or around 20 e-mails from my various shopping websites.  Rue La La.  Gilt.  Ideeli.  Shop It To Me.  Bloomingdale's.  Every other store that I have ever bought from.  It's a sickness.

Anyway, now that that's out in the open, back to Kate Spade.  So, I was HUGELY impressed with the selection yesterday.  The prices really were phenomenal.  I got a mini wallet for going out - my real wallet is too fat to fit in my going-out bags.  (First world problems.  No but actually).  The Wellesley  Barrett retails for $175 and was available at the sample sale for $39.  Not bad huh?
The Wellesley Barrett

In other news, I have recently joined Pinterest and while I realize I'm a bit late in the game on this, just in case any of you have not joined yet - DO IT.  It's WONDERFUL.  It's overwhelming but it's so much fun.  I have already started a style pinboard and will definitely share my finds with you in the future.

Enjoy the end of the week!  And if you live on the east coast, pray for some real fall weather since this odd combination of warm and humid with an occasional chilly breeze is starting to confuse me.

{The Best} Razor

I'm not the kind of girl who takes forever in the shower.  In fact, I'm generally in and out pretty quickly.  With classes starting before 9 am three days a week, saving time getting ready is pretty much a necessity, which is why I'm loving the Venus Spa Breeze.

(Does anyone else remember when Venus first came out and everyone went nuts over that three blade razor?)

Anyway, the Spa Breeze actually had a shave gel bar built into it, so you don't have to mess around with shaving cream or anything like that, which is reallllly nice when you're in a rush.  It's also the closest shave I've had in a while and my skin doesn't feel dried out after using it, which is a complete change.

It's also compatible with all other venus handles (I think it's sort of slippery that they try and sell a more expensive handle when the blades are all interchangeable...), which is handy.

What kind of razor do you use?

Outfit Post: Dinner with the Family

Friday night have always been special in my family.  Even though we would eat dinner together nearly every night when I was growing up, Friday was a special occasion where we'd go out somewhere fun and truly catch up with one another.  When I was away at school in Boston it was one of the things I missed the most about home.  Now that I'm back in DC, I still like to meet up with my parents on Fridays and catch up.

We went out to a really good Irish pub that's pretty close to my parent's house.  Fish&chips plus a Jameson&Coke equals heaven.

Dress: Rugby, Tights: Spanx, Boots: Frye

It was the perfect outfit to get me in the mood for fall clothes!

Outfit Post: Early Fall

Shirt: Boston University Campus Bookstore, Pants: Tailored Sportsman, Boots: Ariat, Spurs: Sprenger

Ok, ok, so this isn't a serious outfit post...but I AM happy to be wearing it (let me explain...).

I realize I've been a little skimpy on the posts this past week, although not without due cause.  Last week was just...one of those weeks where everything that could go wrong did go wrong.

1) Last Sunday Clarence (my equine companion) managed to rip off a good quarter of his hoof, leaving him pretty uncomfortable.  Horses are fragile creatures and even a small injury can be career or life threatening, so when I saw him hobbling around like he had three legs, I was pretty upset.  Our blacksmith was able to patch his foot up and he's as good as new (hence the riding pants/boots above), but I was pretty freaked out.  (I may or may not have paid $30 in shipping to have an equine supply store overnight me a therapeutic boot for his foot...)

2) Our first graded law school writing assignment is due today and it's tough.  Legal writing is completely different from any kind of academic writing I've done before, so it's a big adjustment.  We got our drafts back on Tuesday and mine needed...a lot of editing and formatting work.  So there's that.

3) Because of a scheduling conflict in one class and a required research seminar in another, I ended up having two additional classes this week on top of my normal 15 classes per week.  The last thing any busy law student needs is two additional hours of class time.  NOT OK.

Anyway - things have slowed down and the horsey has made a full recovery, so things are good and I'm glad to be back into the swing of things.

How was your week?  Any unexpected annoyances?
I hope you're all enjoying the weekend!

The Perfect Fall Clutch

Isn't this just too perfect?

The medium brown leather and grey flannel absolutely scream fall.  Since I'm now more concerned with backpacks than beautiful clutches this will have to stay on the wish list, but a girl can always dream.

What are your favorite bags for fall?

{Style Secrets} Sunglasses

As I'm sure C can tell you, I'm hardly the most put-together or stylish person.  Starting law school has only contributed to that...it's hard to feel stylish or attractive when you're lugging around 20+ pounds of textbooks or spending hours in the library on a daily basis.  To combat that, I've begun to develop little fashion strategies that make me feel more grown-up and put-together.

One thing that really elevates an outfit is a great pair of sunglasses. Sunglasses add an instant touch of mystery and are the perfect thing for covering up tired eyes.

I wish I could say that I got into sunglasses because I'm just a chic, mysterious kind of girl.  In truth, I had a pretty scary checkup with my eye doctor, who warned me that going without sunnies (even in the winter!) had begun to damage my eyes and that I was putting myself at risk for serious eye problems down the road.  (Side note: does anyone else go to an eye doctor that plays a video on loop telling you about all the hazards/diseases that can make you go blind?  It's terrifying.)

Obviously the only thing to do was hightail it to Nordstrom to pick out some fabulous sunglasses.  I'm happy to say that my last checkup was much better, but the habit of wearing sunglasses stuck.  Not only is it good for my health, it's also a chic and easy way to elevate an outfit.

The classic wayfarers are my everyday sunglasses.  I've dropped them a million times, I shove them in my purse without the case, I wear them to the barn, and they still look brand new after a year and half of use.  They also come in other colors like tortoiseshell (totally classic and great for blondes) and red (funky) to suit a lot of different styles.

I love these super-stylish sunnies from TOMS.  The tortoiseshell is great and the blue tips are a small but unexpected twist.  Plus, as with TOMS shoes, the company donates a pair of glasses with every purchase.

Aviators are a total classic and definitely give off a tough-girl vibe.

Simply put, sunglasses are one of those things that I can throw on and instantly feel more stylish.  After logging serious hours in the library and reading what feels like a million cases, anything that can make me look and feel a bit more radiant and stylish helps!

What are your favorite sunglasses?  Do you wear sunglasses as a fashion accessory or purely as a functional thing?

Ken Bailey Prints

In my continuing saga to decorate my apartment...

My mom brought be back one of these adorable Ken Bailey prints from a trip with my dad.  I love how he matches the product to the breed of dog.  I also really like how they mix really beautiful, classy, vintage aesthetics with playful messages.  They're an absolute must for any dog lover (he does cat ones too!).

Here are a few of my favorites...

I love how the flavors (chocolate, black forest, lemon yellow) correspond to the three colors of labs (black, chocolate, yellow).  I have a big yellow lab so I LOVE this one.  My parents have a print of this one in our house.

More love for the yellow labs!

This is the one my mom picked up for me...LOVE the Boston Terrier (my college mascot - go BU!)

Scottie with shortbread...too cute!

They're all available online at www.kenbailey.com.  These would be such a cute gift idea for any animal lovers in your life.

Have you seen Ken Bailey posters before?  What kind of posters/art do you like to use to decorate you house/apartment/dorm?

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies

It's the weekend, and we all deserve a treat!  Mmm...

I highly recommend making these fantastically delicious peanut butter chocolate chip cookies from How Sweet Eats.  The come out so wonderfully soft and puffy...just don't overbake them (seriously, I baked mine for no more than ten minutes and they came out great).

Just don't compare the aesthetics of mine to those over at How Sweet.  Mine were tasty, but they're not going to win any beauty pageants any time soon...

I hope you're all having a fabulous weekend!

{The Best} Skinnies

{The Best} will be a little feature I'm doing highlighting some of my absolute favorite products that I can't get enough of.  Kind of like Oprah's "Favorite Things" episodes, minus the giveaways.

For me, nothing says "fall fashion" quite like a pair of perfect skinny jeans tucked into boots.  It's a look that I love, and it practically becomes my uniform by the time October rolls around.  It isn't much more difficult than a pair of bootcut jeans and sneakers, yet it looks so much more polished.

Despite my love of the skinny jean look, I have a hard time finding great skinny jeans that fit.  While I'm pretty average in size overall, I'm also pretty curvy (hello Kim K. booty!), which makes finding skinnies tough.  I despise anything super low-rise, and since I have a booty, rises tend to fall lower than they should on me.

When I tried on the JBrand 910 skinny jean, I was sold.  The low rise is really more of a mid-rise, so I don't have to worry about my behind making an unscheduled appearance.  The material is stretchy enough to be comfortable, but structured enough to avoid bagging out after one wear.  They come in a variety of colors ranging from a light blue to a very dark blue rinse.  And despite skinny jeans' reputation for making your legs look chunky, these inexplicably make my athletic legs look long and lean.

There's something so fantastic about finding the perfect pair of jeans.  What are your favorite pair of skinny jeans?  What's your go-to brand for denim?

Recipe: Garlic Portobello Pizza

Pizza is one of those things that always intimidates people in the kitchen, but it really shouldn't.  Making pizza is really easy and homemade pizza is so delicious.  It's nice to be able to make it exactly the way you like it and to know that the ingredients are wholesome and (relatively) healthy.  While it's super easy to make pizza from scratch, it does take a bit of time, so this is a recipe I'd recommend for a weekend or when you have a bit of extra time for prep work and cleanup.

The first step is to make your dough.  You can also buy a premade ball of dough in the freezer section of your grocery store, but making it from scratch is easy and tastier.

Dough Ingredients (makes one large, thin-crust pizza):
2 cups white flour
3/4 cup warm water
1 packet dry yeast
1 tablespoon honey
1 tablespoon olive oil + extra for oiling the bowl
1/2 teaspoon salt
(Dough recipe adapted from How Sweet it Is)
Mix together water, yeast, olive oil, and honey.  Put it aside and let it sit for 15 minutes.  The yeast will start to expand and look foamy - that's what you're going for.  Add in flour and salt and knead together.  It's going to be really really sticky, just keep working it until it forms into a somewhat smooth ball. Place in an oiled bowl and cover with a cloth.  Allow it to stand in a warm place for an hour or two.

Foamy yeast mixture

Letting the dough rise on the stove top (turned off, of course)

Pizza Ingredients:
1 ball of dough
1 tablespoon of pre-chopped garlic, plus liquid from the jar
1 ball fresh mozzarella cheese, approximately the size of a baseball
8 oz chopped baby portobello mushrooms
2 handfuls of cherry tomatoes
Olive oil

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.  Once your dough has risen, punch it down (time to take out your frustrations).  On a large, nonstick cookie sheet (mine is 12 x 17, but feel free to use a pizza stone or any other pizza cooking device you might have), place your dough and start spreading it out onto the pan.  Take your time here...the dough is going to rip and you're going to think there's absolutely no way it's going to fit the entire area of the pan - just keep slowly coaxing it larger.  It helps to get a teeny bit of oil on your hands to prevent sticking.  Don't worry if the dough seems really thin/there are small tears in places - once it cooks, it will be fine.

Once you have the dough spread out, spoon the garlic out evenly over the crust. Try to avoid having any large chunks of garlic (unless you're under attack from vampires, in which case, good luck).  Take the mozzarella cheese and break it into small pieces/sheets, placing it all over the crust.  Chop the cherry tomatoes in half and place those all over the pizza as well.  Use more or less depending on your taste.

In a small skillet over high heat, place the chopped mushrooms with a drizzle of olive oil.  It's going to seem like a crazy amount of mushrooms, but they're going to cook down quickly.  Let them cook until they release their liquid (this keeps the pizza from getting soggy) and shrink down.  When done, carefully remove the mushrooms (being sure to leave the liquid in the pan) and spread out over the pizza.

Bake for 25 minutes or so until the bottom begins to brown slightly, checking frequently.  Because the cheese, tomatoes, and mushrooms will continue to release liquid while cooking, if the pizza starts to look watery while cooking, use a paper towel to soak up the extra liquid before putting the pizza back in the oven.  Allow to stand for a few minutes before eating (unless you like a serious burn on the roof of your mouth) and enjoy!

Have you ever made homemade pizza before?  What are your favorite toppings?

Fashion Law: When Worlds Collide

Happy Thursday everyone!

I have to say, I am looking forward to an ESPECIALLY happy Thursday today.  I am extremely fortunate to live very close to Lincoln Center and thus, at the moment, tantalizingly close to the epicenter of all things fashion-related during NEW YORK FASHION WEEK!  I have spent a fairly significant amount of time lurking around LC and the entrance to the tents, admiring all the amazing outfits that people have been wearing and wishing I could get inside to watch some runway action :) While I will not be attending any of the shows (shocking, I know, my invite must have gotten lost in the mail), I will be attending a real live NYFW event tomorrow night to celebrate the first anniversary of the Fordham Law School Fashion Law Institute!!

That's right, my incredibly cool Property professor invited our whole class to the event, since she is the founder of the now one-year-old Institute.  The Fashion Law Institute is the first fashion law center in the world (!) and is supported by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (whose president is the legendary Diane von Furstenberg).  It's one of the things that drew me toward this law school and I am extremely excited and fortunate to be able to attend its first anniversary celebration!

I have been told that tonight's dress code is "business fabulous" - so obviously I've been obsessing about my outfit ever since we got the invite.  I promise to post pictures of my final decision as well as all my NYFW photos once my computer is back! (My computer is at the computer doctor and the one that I have borrowed from my parents does not have my camera software on it.  Poor timing, I know).

Also, another exciting NYFW tidbit: I ran into Jessica Quirk of What I Wore (whatiwore.tumblr.com) and I of course had to go up and introduce myself and tell her how much I love reading her blog!  She is super sweet in person, we chatted for a little while (but I think I may have babbled and been a little starstruck...)  She has had amazing access to this NYFW and has some great photos up on her blog, I highly recommend checking them out.

Anyway, that's all for now!  Hope everyone is enjoying their week.  I'll do my best to share some NYFW coverage once all my electronics are back in working order, and maybe even post some comments on some of the Spring/Summer 2012 collections based on what I've seen second-hand.  There were some LOVELY things out there this week.

OPI: Teenage Dream

After the short week last week, I needed something bright and cheerful to get me through a week of classes.  This bright, glittery polish (appropriately named after the Katy Perry song) did the trick!

It's so shimmery and bright.  Of course it clashes with pretty much everything I've worn this week, but it definitely puts a smile on my face every time I look down at my nails!

Have you tried any of the OPI Katy Perry polishes?

"No, I think I'm going to catch up on my correspondence..."

A few weeks back I did a post about monogrammed stationary on Etsy.  Since then I went ahead and ordered two beautiful sets of personalized notecards, so I thought I would share with you!

I'm going to use the giraffe print ones on the right for personal stuff like thank-you notes for gifts and things like that.  I love the bright color and the slightly funky design that doesn't looks cluttered or over-the-top.

I chose the ones on the left for more professional stuff, like job interviews or a thank-you note to a professor.  They actually have my entire name (first and last) underneath the initials, but I blurred out my last name for the sake on anonymity.  You can see what they'd look like here.  I love that they're personalized (and preppy!), yet still have a very professional, serious look.

I ordered both sets through Oh Louise! Designs.  They're absolutely lovely in person and were delivered within a week.  I'd absolutely shop from her store again!

Thanks for letting me share!

Blog Redesign

To go along with our new name and the addition of C, I decided our blog could use a bit of a facelift!  As much as I loved the Dark 'N Stormy background, Fall is upon us and it seemed like the right time for a new, more sophisticated look.

I'm not very computer savvy at all and I did the new banner myself, so don't judge too harshly!

I hope your week is off to a good start!

Happy Football Season!

The regular football season starts today!  Even though I grew up in Maryland, my family has always been avid Buffalo fans.  I'll be wearing this today:

I love these shirts...so cute!

What's your team?  How do you like to show team spirit?

Remembering

I'm sure every other blog on the planet is doing a 9/11 post, but as a lifelong resident of the DC Metropolitan area and a current resident of the District proper, I wanted to share my thoughts.  Thanks for reading.

Ten years ago today I was sitting in my 7th grade English class when the planes hit the towers and Pentagon.  School policy was to keep information about the attacks from students until they could talk to their parents, but our teacher chose to spare us the wait and informed us of what had happened in New York and Virginia.  I'll never forget her words that day when she told us "this is going to be a very big deal for a very long time."

Her words were incredibly prophetic.  As we slowly learned the details of the attack, I think most people were in a state of shock.  It would be weeks before the true historical magnitude of the situation would be understood.

Even with a decade's distance from the attacks, it is immediately apparent that the pain from 9/11 is still very much with us.  When the earthquake shook my law school classroom (we're only a few blocks from the White House) last month, my first thought wasn't a natural disaster, it was a terrorist attack.

I am reminded of a favorite quote by Rose Kennedy.  "It has been said 'time heals all wounds.'  I do not agree.  The wounds remain.  In time, the mind, protecting its sanity, covers them with scar tissue and the pain lessens.  But it is never gone."

Hug your loved ones and stay safe today.

September 11, 2011

Ten years ago today, the world was a different place.  September 11 was not yet one of those days that is permanently imprinted in your mind.  It was just “Tuesday.”  But now everyone remembers exactly where they were that day.  I was only 12 but I remember almost every detail like it was yesterday.  I had been 12 for less than a month.  My mom had taken our cats to the vet that morning.  It was a clear day, but in my memory it is dark and overcast.  We were in first period when the planes hit.  And we were in second period when we found out.  I had science.  Our teachers weren’t supposed to tell us, but they turned their TVs on and we saw it anyway.  I barely knew what the word “bombing” meant.

I was in Washington, D.C. on September 11, 2001, and I will be in New York City on September 11, 2011.  My father saw the Pentagon burn from his office.  We didn’t have school on September 12.  Whatever age we were, we lost our innocence that day.  We started worrying about things like color-coded terror threat levels.  We went to war.  We stopped feeling safe on planes and in public transit and in major cities and tall buildings.

I was profoundly affected by 9/11, and yet I was barely affected at all.  A new friend told me that his girlfriend works for FDNY, and that they receive letters and artwork and 9/11 tributes every day, and have for the past ten years.  Thousands of people lost far more than just their innocence that day.

But for me, I want the 9/11 anniversary to be about the hope, strength, and courage that Americans showed in the days and weeks following that day.  What choice do we have but to celebrate the heroism that we saw that day?  To the FDNY, the NYPD, the Port Authority Police Officers, the heroes of 9/11, and everyone who lost something or someone irreplaceable that day, I offer you my thoughts and prayers.

And to cite a song that I remember waking up to on the radio one day that week...
“We get knocked down, but we’re American.”  I’m proud of my country every day for what we survived.

I’ll be wearing red, white, and blue on the anniversary.  Will you join me?

Addicted to MAB

I've posted in the past about how much I love Rebecca Minkoff bags and how I've had my eye on her stuff for ages.  I finally got my chance to snag a gorgeous navy blue Morning After Mini during last week's sale.  I'm in love!

A lot of the photos that I had seen of this bag make it look really structured and boxy, but as soon as I got it and took all the paper stuffing out, it was gorgeously slouchy without being totally unstructured and loosey-goosey.  Like with my MAC, the leather is to-die for.  I'm a total purse addict, and I can confidently say that quality of the Rebecca Minkoff bags is comparable with brands that retail for several times the price.

I was also a bit apprehensive about the size.  I'm 5'6" and I like big bags, so I kind of flinched at the idea of buying anything labeled "mini."  I'm really glad that I stuck with my original plan and went with the mini...it easily fits over my shoulder and holds a ton of stuff.  I couldn't imagine carrying a bag that much larger as an everyday bag.

The color is so rich...it's even prettier in person!

Excuse the messy closet and dirty mirror!

Thanks for letting me share!

Home Improvement: Lamps!

As I've been moving into my new apartment, I've been trying to make lots of little updates and changes to spruce things up.  One project that I undertook this past weekend was to give a pair of old lamps a facelift.

They started out this hideous color, with no shades, and covered with scuffs.

Materials: sanding block, painter's tape, primer/sealer, paintbrushes, paint, newspaper

I started by sanding them down to prepare them for a fresh coat of paint.  Then I did a coat of primer (obviously I had to choose Martha Stewart's brand!), followed by two coats of cobalt blue indoor paint.  I finished with a final coat of sealer and then added a fresh lampshade!

Voila!

A closeup of the color

My living room...with new and improved lamps!

I'm not a particularly handy person, but I had fun on this project and I think it turned out pretty well.

Have you tried any little home improvement projects in your house/apartment/dorm?  How did they turn out?

Craving: Tory Burch Flannel Blair Riding Boot

I. Die.

Ugh.  These are too perfect.  I already have a closet full of gorgeous fall boots, so I won't be getting these, but a girl can still admire.  These are perfection.

What shoes and boots do you have your eyes on for fall?

Food: Pasta with Roasted Red Pepper Sauce

As I've mentioned before, I'm a carb junkie.  I love pasta.  I could eat pasta every night.  I also love roasted red peppers and parmesan cheese.  When I came across The Pioneer Woman's recipe for Pasta with Roasted Red Pepper Sauce I knew I had to make it.

In order to make this recipe work for me, I made a few little changes.  First, I used jarred roasted red peppers instead of making my own from fresh.  I did this as a time saving (and a not-burning-down-my-apartment-building) measure.  Second, I used about half the cream the recipe calls for (Pioneer Woman's recipes are delicious, but she uses so much saturated fat).  It was still decadent and delicious, but not as heavy.  Third, I used the parmesan cheese in the green can.  Freshly shaved cheese off the block is certainly better...Kraft is what I had on hand.  Fourth, I used pre-chopped garlic.  Time saver.

A few quick notes for success: 1) Don't leave out the pine nuts.  Toasting them is super easy - you know they're done when they give off a really great, buttery aroma.  2) Make sure to dice your onion pretty small - if you don't, you end up with big chunks in your final sauce and it's not good.

Ingredients

Onions and garlic - I really should have chopped my onions finer

Yummy!

Have you tried any of the Pioneer Woman's recipes?  Have you ever tried or made a dish like this?  What are your favorite pasta dishes?

The First Day of the Rest of the Blog

Hi! I'm Claire and I am the newest addition to what is now the Bend and Snap! :)  As she told you I am a BC graduate and currently a 1L in New York City!  I am thrilled that my esteemed colleague has invited me to join her on here!  Since we are now in a long-distance BFF-ship for the first time in a while and we can't shop together as often, this is the next best thing, am I right?

So, getting down to business, I want to use my inaugural post on this blog to talk about a problem that has been plaguing me for a while.  I have too many Longchamp bags.

I'm not talking too many in the sense of I have them spilling out of my closet (which, to be fair, wouldn't be saying much, because I live in an NYC apartment).  I don't even have very many.  Fine, I have four.  See?  It's not that many.  It's barely any.  The problem is, I don't have any other bags.

Now, don't worry.  I'm not a savage.  I have clutches.  I have totes.  I have evening bags.  But as far as everyday bags go, it's Le Pliage or bust over here.  Oddly enough, I didn't even notice until I added on to the collection the other day (number four is only a week old) because I needed the bigger one to accommodate my laptop.  (Unlike Kate, I have always used a backpack, and decided this year that I am going to split my time between the backpack and the bag so I look cute in class at least some of the time).  Anyway, after making this purchase (Le Pliage large in Bilberry and I'm in love) I realized that I need to diversity my handbag portfolio.  Part of the problem is that Longchamps are just so freaking USEFUL and VERSATILE that you barely even notice you're using the same bag every day.

But I do, and I need a new one.  So I'm on the hunt for a new handbag.  Unfortunately, I am very picky, and my income is restrictive in that I do not have an income, so it's going to be a challenge.  So far, I am eyeing the Modalu Pippa, possibly in the small grab size since the medium is a little too big for me.  The problem here is of course that I don't like the "Chili" color, but I don't like the texture of any of the other options.  As you can see, it's a bit of a pickle.  Suggestions are welcome, I'll keep you posted on what I find.

Also, one final and entirely unrelated comment: I'm going to wear white after Labor Day this year.  That's one rule I generally follow but this year I can't bear to let my new white skinny J Brands get relegated to the back of my closet when they've barely seen the light of day.  I'm transitioning them - they deserve it.  Who's with me?

xoxo

Big Changes!

Big (but awesome!) changes are coming to Legally Brunette Kate! I'm super excited to be welcoming my absolute BFF in the entire world on board as my co-blogger:

Regally Blonde is a recent graduate of Boston College and attending law school in New York City. We went to high school together and have been BFFs since 9th grade...she's hilarious, fashionable, and fabulous. She's (of course) a lover of all things preppy and Lilly!

Since it'll now be the two of us, we're updating the name of the blog to "The Bend and Snap." We trust that you'll get the reference!

I'll still be posting 4-5 times a week...our goal is to have more posts with a broader perspective. I hope you'll stick around with us during the transition and that you enjoy our new look.

I hope everyone's (short) week is off to a great start!

Farewell, Summer!

I decided to treat myself to a pedicure to celebrate surviving the first two weeks of law school.  In honor of the end of summer (sniff!), I went with this beautifully beachy shade.

The warm coral is decidedly summery and the name is a perfect reminder of spending days by the water.

What color polish are you wearing?

Craving: Sightseer Dress

As I begin to think about what I want to wear this fall, I've been keeping my eye on casual dresses.  I love how put-together and professional they look, yet at the same time they're so effortless and easy (really...what's easier and more chic than pulling on a dress, tights, and a pair of boots?).

One dress that I'm really digging is the J. Crew Sightseer dress.  I love that the material is so soft, yet the shape is polished and grown-up looking.

It would be cute now with flats and then with tights/boots once the weather cools off.  I'm definitely going to make an effort to get myself to a J. Crew store over the weekend!

DC Stereotypes

This has been making the rounds among my DC friends...it's too funny!

I love that I live in a city that attracts so many tourists (both from the US and from around the world), but "Fannypacks, segways, cameras, and idiots" definitely strikes a chord at times!
